Fall visit with seminarians

Letter from the President

Welcome to the Serra Club of Halton Region! We are part of Serra International, a worldwide movement that exists to promote vocations to the priesthood and to religious life.

We received our official Charter from Bishop Douglas Crosby in September, 2012, and he warmly welcomed us as a group that would focus on promoting vocations in and for the Diocese of Hamilton.

Our group meets on the third Thursday of the month, beginning at 5:45 p.m.. A Liturgy is presided over by our Serra chaplain, followed by a meal eaten together in fellowship. Guest speakers are invited every meeting and give presentations on some aspect of vocations or other spiritual matters, for our education and inspiration. There is usually a short business meeting to discuss any current or future plans for creating awareness of vocations.

WWe stress the importance of becoming acquainted with our diocesan seminarians at St. Peter’s (London), St. Augustine’s (Toronto) and Christ the King (Buffalo), and each of us is assigned a seminarian, whom we encourage by sending cards at Christmas, Easter, etc., to let them know we are supporting them through our prayers. We meet them as a group for lunch at least once a year.

We place Serra brochures in churches and send bulletin notices to inform Catholics in Halton about events concerning vocations, and we hope to visit as many churches as possible with information displays, to let parishioners know how they can help, and perhaps encourage some to become part of Serra as well as to pray for vocations.

Each year our club works with the Serra Club of Hamilton to facilitate the Altar Server Awards held at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King. Recognition for their important role in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is well deserved.

With the support of the Vocations Director and high school Chaplains, we have facilitated a Vocations Tour in the nine Halton Region high schools during both of the past two years. A dozen priests, brothers, sisters, seminarians and deacons visit students in their classrooms to share their vocation stories and answer students’ questions. Masses are held in each school.

An annual Golf For Vocations is held each August to invite priests and religious to enjoy an afternoon and evening together. For details about this and our other activities please visit us at www.serrahalton.ca.

Our Church needs laypeople, all of us, to promote vocations: after all, they come from our families! There are no prerequisites and no age limits for joining Serra – just a willingness to work and to pray for more labourers in the Lord’s Vineyard. Please think about joining us!

Mary, Mother of Vocations, pray for us!
Garth Brown
