Club meetings are held at Senior Common Room, University of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto (Bay and St. Joseph Street). Meetings are held the third Wednesdays each month and start with Mass in St. Basil’s Church at 12:05 pm and then proceed to a buffet lunch and presentation in Senior Common Room, immediately adjacent to the Church.

Our featured guest speakers inform us on topics of interest or concern to Catholics. Speakers range from Bishops, Priests, Seminarians, representatives of the Catholic School System, Catholic Youth Organizations etc. The presentations have the objective of encouraging and affirming vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life as well as assisting members in the growth and formation of their Catholic faith.

Club Activities

Altar Server Award – This is an annual event where we invite pastors in Toronto to identify altar servers who have performed their duties in an exemplary fashion. We recognize these young people at a special Mass where medals are bestowed by Bishop Kirkpatrick of Northern Region. We distribute prayer cards and provide a light reception after. In 2014 some 150 altar servers were recognized at St. Paul’s Basilica.

Eucharistic Adoration for Vocations – A Eucharistic Adoration for Vocation service is conducted each month at St. Basil’s parish.

Vocations Fair – This is an event initiated by the Serra Club of Toronto Downtown in 2007 and held annually. Various Religious Orders, and lay communities are invited to set up information booths at the host parish and be available after Saturday and Sunday Masses to explain their particular chrism. Invited speakers give vocation related homilies. Parishioners and high school students in the area are invited to attend.

Priest Portrait Program – TThis program encourages young people to consider a priestly vocation by providing a portrait of a newly ordained priest to his former high school. If possible the newly ordained priest celebrates Mass for the students. In 2015 Fr. Scott Birchall will be honored at St. Elizabeth Seton High School in Newmarket.

Enculturation Dinner – This program welcomes priests from around the world who come to serve in the Archdiocese of Toronto. We offer fellowship, support and encouragement. In 2014, 14 priests were celebrated.

Rosary for Priest’s intentions – Every Thursday at noon hour mass at St. Basil’s Parish a special recitation of the rosary is conducted for priest intentions. This program was started in the fall of 2010.

Recent News

Praise God for the lovely gathering of Serrans from Halton, Bradford, Toronto West and Toronto Downtown. There was a great response to the invitation of Erin Dunphy, president of Serra of Toronto Downtown to attend our meeting. Erin welcomed all the Serrans and guided them on their way up to the S & L. Thanks to Paul Crawford who arranged this meeting with Fr. Thomas Rosica (CEO) Salt & Light TV.

Fr. Rosica gave a brief presentation on the Chapel before Mass. The altar table was the base of the altar at 2002 WYD. The big cross at the altar was made by a Jewish lady and used at the Altar of 2002 WYD She sculptured the face of her son who died. The chair used by St. John Paul II when he was at Strawberry Island while watching the Stations of the Cross, relics of Saints: Teresa of Calcutta, Gianna Berreta Molla, John Paul II stained glass windows donated by a Bishop and others.

Fr. Rosica presided the Mass. After the Mass, he introduced each of his staff. His request was to pray and support Salt & Light with it staff and its mission: to evangelize and proclaim the Word of God! S & L crew is now in El Salvador, who is doing Part II of the Documentary in the place where Blessed Oscar Romero was assassinated. They need a special prayer for their safety.

Lunch was served. Fr. Rosica gave a presentation on his vocation. It was very inspiring! He addressed some questions raised. He gave a tour of the S & L, especially his office! His books were available for purchase to help out S & L funding. He invited everyone to visit S & L and to attend Mass. Please call first to get an updated schedule.
