CHARTER MASS AND DINNER

On June 3rd, 2018, the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Serra Club of North Peel of the Archdiocese of Toronto, was born. With the guidance and encouragement of Mario Biscardi, President Elect of Serra International, and initially assisted by Pat Hearn, District Governor of the Maritimes, the Club was able to qualify for a charter. Thanks to the indomitable spirit and perseverance of the husband and wife team, Dennis and Teresa Buonafede they kept us, the prospective Serrans, focused on the road ahead, as what St. Junipero Serra had done.

The Charter Night began with the celebration of the Eucharist. His Excellency, Auxiliary Bishop John Boissonneau officiated while our Chaplain, Fr. Liborio Amaral and Fr. Antoine Badr (Paroisse de la Sainte-Famille), concelebrated with him. Fr. Liborio is also the Pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brampton, Ontario where the ceremony was held. He was formerly the Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Toronto.

After the Mass, the induction of members and installation of officers followed, conducted by District Governor of Ontario, Fran Pulumbarit. Distribution of membership certificates and Serra pins was a joint effort by Mario Biscardi, President Elect of Serra International, and Anthony Mangione, Trustee, Serra Canada Council and also the Immediate Past District Governor for Ontario. Bishop Boissonneau gave the new Serrans his blessings and he led us in the Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was the culmination of our group’s desire to see the chartering of the Serra Club of North Peel that will help in God’s plan of salvation by encouraging vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

After the proceedings, a banquet was held in the adjoining new and spacious hall of the church. The blessing of the food was invoked by Fr. Liborio. Dennis acted as the Master of Ceremonies and Fr. Liborio assumed the role of the banquet’s official wine server. Bishop Boissonneau and Mario took turns in giving us their inspirational speeches. Teresa also gave her acceptance speech as the newly-inducted President. A good time was had by all, including our visiting fellow Serrans and guests. Thanks to all involved and congratulations all around!

Our special thanks to the altar servers, the choir and the catering service.

Mary, Mother of Vocations, pray for us!
St. Junipero Serra, pray for us!
